Those last few years of high school can feel a bit like purgatory. You are filling your schedule with electives and trying to get enough credit for graduation. Meanwhile, you can’t stop thinking about college. What will it be like? What classes will you take? Will you meet tons of friends? If you are sick of waiting for the next stage to start, you might want to try College in The High School. This program was created to give you a headstart on your college degree without you ever stepping foot off your high school campus. As a Seattle senior photographer, I have gotten the chance to chat with tons of students who have chosen this option. Here’s what you need to know!
What is College In The High School?
College in the High School is a more convenient alternative to the Running Start Program. While the Running Start Program takes place on a college campus, College in the High School is…well…college in high school. You will be able to sign up for classes that you will take on your high school campus taught by your school’s teachers. Then, once you graduate, you will be able to transfer the credits to your college of choice. The program is available through North Seattle College, and it’s free for all qualified students. They allow students in grades 9-12 to take advantage of this fantastic program.
North Seattle College’s College in the High School Program
So, what does this look like in real life? With North Seattle College, you will have a list of classes you can choose from depending on your high school. While many of the classes are basic gen-eds (think History and English Composition), many of them let you explore a number of topics so you can have some unique insight before it’s time to declare your major. They offer Japanese, Creative Writing, Intro to American Film, Medical Terminology, and more.
Once you have completed your class, it’s going to count as a North Seattle College credit on your transcript. While it will seamlessly transfer to North Seattle College, nearly every other community college and four-year university will accept it. The program has some other great perks, too! Because they want you to have all the resources to succeed, you will have access to the North Seattle College library, tutoring services, wellness center, and more!
