Throughout high school, you spend a lot of time thinking about what college will look like. You dream about the groups you’ll join, the friendships you’ll build, and the opportunities you’ll have. One thing you’re probably not excited about, however, are the gen eds. When your schedule is loaded with a repeat of high school classes, it can be hard to stay motivated. That’s exactly why Central Washington University Sammamish created a Running Start Program for kids in Sammamish. As a Seattle-area senior photographer, I have gotten the chance to chat with students who have benefitted from this program. Here’s what you need to know!
400 E. University Way, Ellensburg, Washington 98926
CWU has been around since 1891, getting students started on their future careers. Originally, this was a teacher’s college with courses created to further the state’s education. While they still keep their commitment to academia and public service, they are also constantly finding ways to give students a jump in their schooling. Their Running Start Program is the best example of this. They make it a breeze to start stacking up those college creds before you even graduate high school!
The Central Washington University Sammamish Running Start Program is available for junior and senior students in Ellensburg and Sammamish. It is completely free, and the courses are easily transferable to both CWU as well as other colleges and universities across the country. Plus, they are going to apply directly to your high school graduation credits. It’s the same amount of work with double the benefits! You will have an advisor there to help you figure out which classes will be ideal for your goals. They also want to make sure you have all the resources you will need to succeed. You will be given a MyCWU account so you can access their library, their Career Services, and their Learning Commons. You can even use their Wellness Center as well as their University Recreation!
Okay, so what if you’re not currently enrolled in a Sammamish public school but live in the area? No sweat! Central Washington University Sammamish has online courses available for homeschoolers. In order to access these, you will need to enroll through a local public school. That doesn’t mean you actually have to attend. You can contact your local district to file a declaration of intent to homeschool. You will also let them know you want to do the Running Start Program. In order for these credits to count, you will be required to meet College Academic Distribution Requirements.
If you need a way to get started on your college career, you are going to love the Running Start Program through Central Washington University Sammamish! With these courses, you can get started on your gen eds before you even have your high school degree.
